How DVA Tutoring can support ADF Veterans and their children.

At ThriveTutors, we deeply value the contributions of our veterans, and one of the key ways we offer support is through high-quality, personalised DVA tutoring for the children of veterans eligible for the Education Benefits Scheme.

This blog will guide you through the process of accessing “additional tuition” funding for your child under this scheme.

What is DVA Tutoring?

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) recognises the unique challenges that service in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) can pose to a child’s academic progress. These challenges might include frequent relocations, extended periods of parental absence, or disabilities that limit parental support.

To mitigate these impacts, the DVA provides funding for “additional tuition.”

Eligible parents or caregivers can receive up to $3,500 annually to support their child’s academic performance if it has been adversely affected by circumstances beyond their control.

Who is Eligible?

As with many DVA claims, there are specific eligibility criteria that caregivers must meet:

Under MRCAETS

A child of a member or former member who:

is eligible, or was at some point, for the Special Rate Disability Pension (SRDP);

suffers an impairment that constitutes 80 or more impairment points; or

whose death was related to service.

Under VCES (VEA):

An eligible child is someone who is:

The child of a current or former member of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) who is receiving (or was receiving prior to their death) a Disability Compensation Payment:

at the special rate (commonly known as T&PI);

at the extreme disablement adjustment (EDA) rate;

at an increased rate because of multiple amputations, or multiple amputations and blindness; or

the child of a current or former ADF member whose death was war or defence caused; or

the child of a veteran who was an Australian prisoner-of-war and is now deceased.

How Does it Work?

Complete the Education Authority Observations

Once you have confirmed that your child is eligible, an education authority, such as your child’s teacher, must provide an assessment of your child’s academic status.

This authority needs to confirm that with the support of tutoring, your child can improve academically, and they must agree with your observations about your child’s potential. This is detailed in Part B of the additional tuition application form. Available here.

As the additional tuition funding is part of the Education Benefits Scheme, your child must first be approved for this scheme before applying for additional tuition.

Submit Your Paperwork

While the DVA allows for postal submissions, we recommend emailing the completed form. Both scanned and digitally completed forms are acceptable. Send your application to both of the following email addresses:

educationschemes@dva.gov.au

tuition@dva.gov.au
